Finding an Opponent

What do You Want to Play?
The first part of finding a Magic Online opponent is deciding what kind of games you want to play. Here are some questions to ask yourself:

Are you a new Magic player or more experienced?
If you're new to the Magic game, start out in the Practice Games room where you can play against other new players. Once you're comfortable with Magic rules and the Magic Online interface you can check out what goes on in the other rooms.

If you're more experienced, you'll want to hunt for a game in one of the Casual Play rooms, the Leagues room, or maybe join a tournament in the Premier Events or Sanctioned Play room.

Do you want to play in a casual or competitive environment?
If you're not looking for an intense, competitive game, you'll want to stick with games in the Casual Play rooms. While you'll still find tough players to play against, none of the games there will affect your ratings.

For a little more competition, go to the Leagues room. Leagues are more structured than normal casual play, but not as intense as a tournament.

If you're ready to start climbing the Magic Online rankings, join a tournament. Wizards of the Coast sponsors large tournaments in the Premier Events room, and other events appear regularly in the Sanctioned Play room.

Do you want to play a Constructed or Limited event?
Constructed and Limited events are held in different Magic Online rooms. Limited events are also separated into Draft and Sealed Deck rooms. The rooms in the Casual Play and Sanctioned Tournaments areas are labeled with the type of events held in them. Leagues and tournaments in the Premier Events room have the format listed for each event.

Multiplayer events are played in the Multiplayer Games room. You can play both Constructed and Sealed Deck events in the room.

What Magic sets do you want to play with?
Finally, you need to decide what sets you want to use in the event. When you start an event you can select the sets you want to use. If you join an event, you can see the sets being used in the Product Used column (in spreadsheet mode) or on the pop-up window when you point at a table (in graphic mode).

Find an Opponent
Once you've decided what kind of game you want to play, there are different ways to find an opponent.

Start a new event
Pick the style and format of event you want to play and go to a room you can play that kind of event in. Then start a new event and wait for opponents to show up. It may take a while for someone to join, but you know that player is interested in the format you want to play.

Look for an open game
Pick the style and format of event you want to play and go to a room you can play that kind of event in. Then look for a game that's waiting for players to join. The easiest way is to switch to spreadsheet view and look for "Waiting for Players" in the Status column. Select an event and click Join.

In graphic mode, point your mouse at a table with an open chair to see what type of event is waiting to start. Click a table to join that event.

Join a tournament or league
Go to the Premier Events, Sanctioned Play, or Leagues room and find an event you want to play in. Select the event and click Join. See Tournaments or Leagues for more information.

Challenge another player
You can also challenge a specific player to a casual game or match. See Challenge for more information.
